problema con gdm, no aparece ventana

Buenas compañeros, vereis tengo un problemilla.
Resulta que estoy intentado personalizar la iso de Ubuntu, bien, cuando me dispongo a modificar el gdm, según un tutorial que estoy siguiendo, después de usar el comando
MAKEDEV generic
y
/etc/init.d/gdm start
deberia aparecer una ventana con el login, pero solo sale este mensaje:

siguiendo el ejemplo, introduzco el comando: start gdm pero dice que el proceso ya esta ejecutandose
alguna sugerencia?
